FAQs

Do you need underlay for laminate & engineered wood flooring?

All of our laminate floors require an underlay to be used. Most of the wood flooring we sell is designed to be installed with underlay. If you want a more solid feel then you can fully bond the floor with adhesive. If you're not sure which underlay is right for your flooring type, get in touch.

Do you need underlay for vinyl flooring?

Stick down (or dry back as it's somtimes known) vinyl requires an adhesive to fully bond the flooring to the subfloor. Click Vinyl comes in either a rigid or flexible click, these types of vinyl are best installed with an underlay, some brands have the underlay already attached so there is no need for further underlay. For all types of vinyl the subfloor must be level and even and always refer to the manufacturers installation instructions.

How thick is underlay?

At Wood2U, we stock a range of underlay thicknesses from less than 2mm to 7mm to suit your preferences. For laminate and engineered wood flooring, we recommend that you opt for a thickness between 3mm to 5mm. If your vinyl flooring doesn't already have built-in underlay, we would recommend an underlay between 1mm to 2mm.

How long does underlay last?

When installed correctly the underlay will last the lifetime of the flooring. It is important to select the right type of underlay to suit the use of the floor. If the flooring is installed in a commercial situation (for example) the underlay will need to be more durable than when used in a domestic bedroom.

How much underlay do I need?

To know how much underlay you will need, calculate the area of the room by multiplying the length by the width of the room. For example, a room that is 5m x 4m will need 20m². Note: Depending on the shape of the room you might need some extra for waste so we would always recommend rounding up to the nearest pack / roll size.

Now, check how many m² the underlay will cover and buy slightly more than what you need. For example, if you need 13m² and the underlay only covers 5m², then you'll need 3 units of the underlay.
